The Chesapeake Bay Program has data available from a data set created via USGS for land-cover data set for the entire watershed, with snapshots compiled for 1984, 1992, 2001, 2006. Using various sources such as NOAA’sĀ  2001 Coastal Change Analysis Program (CCAP) datasetĀ  Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper satellite imagery to create. We used it to create some simple overlays of the Washington, D.C. region for the four years.

The land cover is categorized by rates of urbanization, ranging from highly urban through natural areas such as deciduous forest as well as agricultural cropland. It is intriguing to see the extent, or stability, of changes, especially in the suburban areas.
